A lucky frog from Japan that inspired a whimsical woodblock design.
On one of my visits to Japan I brought back a frog ornament as a gift for my grandma. It's such a simple little object, and yet displays so much charm. I decided to create a print featuring the frog to convey that sense of charm, which still makes me smile every time I look at it.
It always seemed to me that the frog was gazing up at something, so I added a little fruit fly to my design (- the title plays on the theme of needing 5 portions of fruit and veg per day for a healthy, balanced diet!)
To make the print I carved a series of cherry woodblocks. The frogs are printed by hand in small batches from each of these blocks in turn to add all the layers of colour in the design. You'll see the blocks in the attached images. There's also a very speeded up video you can watch that shows me printing each of the 10 colours in the design.
All the prints in a batch are handmade in this way, but as each one has been inked and pressed slightly differently, they are all unique, original little works of art. Each finished frog print is embossed with my signature seals and (the short version of) the title is added in pencil.
Frogs are a symbol of good fortune in Japan, so this print makes for a perfect good luck token - for yourself, or someone you love - great of gifting!
The print comes ready to frame in a generous double mount that's 8" x 10", or framed and ready to hang in thin black wood.
