On a Hebridean beach one holiday I photographed a large group of oyster catchers as they all took off from the sand. There were dozens of birds in each of the photos, but back in the studio I spent time arranging just a small selection of them into the simple design for this print.

Oyster catchers are easily recognisable with their striking black and white plumage, and it was their shapes against the sky that I wanted to capture in this print, but their impossibly long, very bright orange beaks had to feature too.

These prints are made by hand in very small batches. The layers of colour are printed in turn from carved vinyl blocks using water-based inks on Japanese paper. Because the blocks are inked and pressed individually, slight variations occur from one print to the next, making each one unique.

Presented in a double bevel-cut soft white mount with a slight texture.

Overall mount size is 18cm x 31cm.

Please note due to the long, thin format of this print, it will not fit a standard of-the-shelf frame. Choose the framed option, ready to hang for your convenience, or choose unframed and discuss your options with your framer.

Further Details

Is this an original, or a reproduction print?

This is a hand-made original print, meticulously crafted by me in my Kirkcudbright studio. I carved the design into blocks of vinyl and printed from those blocks onto white Japanese paper with archival pigment inks to create this keepsake artwork.

How big is it?

If you're buying an unframed print the size refers to the overall size of the mount.

If you're choosing a framed print, the size refers to the glass size. The width of the frame moulding will add a couple of centimetres each way to the final dimensions.

What type of paper is it printed on?

The paper for this print is Japanese Hosho - a smooth paper with a white tone. The inks are water-based pigment inks of archival quality for longevity.

Does it come with the mount?

Yes! The double bevel-cut mount is included in both the unframed and framed versions.

How is it packed for posting?

Unframed prints are sent in a protective sleeve within a rigid cardboard mailing envelope.

Framed prints are packaged with protective bubble and/or cardboard for safe transit.

Is the packaging eco friendly?

All packaging is as environmentally friendly as possible, and can be reused or recycled.

What are the delivery costs and timescales?

No extra shipping costs are added at check out - the price you see is the price you pay. Hand-made prints are created, mounted and framed in my studio. For unframed pieces, the delivery time is generally within 1 week as these are usually in stock, ready to send out to you. Please note that framed versions may not be immediately available, so could take upto 2-3 weeks to arrive. I will be in touch to advise of a delivery timescale once you've placed your order.

What about returns and refunds?

In the unlikely event that your print arrives damaged, please contact me to arrange a replacement or refund.

Returns for any other reason are discretionary, and limited to 30 days from placing your order. Please get in touch and I'll aim to help you out.
