This hand-carved and printed design of wild garlic flowers was inspired by the sense of freshness these blooms bring.
Wild garlic grows in abundance along the country roads around Kirkcudbright each spring, beginning with a carpet of green leaves before the flowers burst into spheres made up of tiny white star-like blooms. It always seems to me like these delicate miniature fireworks are a celebration of the passing of winter, and I love how they bring an uplifting energy to the countryside at this time of year.
Closer inspection of the print reveals the embossing of the petals, and also the visible fibres of this white Tosa-shi paper that glisten when they catch the light. These details add a textural dimension that is made possible due to the handcrafted nature of the piece, and add life to the print. The design gently echoes the feeling of renewal that the flowers themselves bring.
Each print is made using woodblock techniques, printing in layers of colour to gradually build the image.
With a double bevel cut mount chosen to complement the colours within the design, this handcrafted print is ready to frame at 7" x 10".
